Fellow Geeks,

I just got a laptop in today, a Dell Inspiron 8000. He installed Easy CD Creator 5 with Take 2 which is not compatible with Windows 2000. He rebooted and he gets the famous BOOT_DEVICE_NOT_ACCESSIBLE. Booting to last known good configuration, running repair with repair disks, and going to the recovery console and repairing the boot sector still results with the same BSoD.

Funny part is, it says the Boot device is not accessible (I'm assuming the hard drive), then why can I access it through the recovery console? I can browse the C directory, the c:\winnt directory, copy files to different directories and so forth. I'm thinking there has to be a way to get back into windows.

Its almost as if the Easy CD Creator software over wrote the Hard drive driver not allowing Windows to see it anymore.

If anyone has any ideas let me know cause I'm scratching my head on this one:)

Thanks,

Ok, I think I figured something out. I decided to re-install Windows to a different folder. Then access this guys data that way. I wonder if anyone knows any other ways to work around this?

Thanks,

Did you by chance try safe mode and uninstall adaptec's software?
Once it is uninstalled then they need to download the patch for the program and NOT install take two as it DOES NOT work with W2K

futuretech,

The user uninstalled the adaptec software. It will not go to safe mode. It BSoD's instead. We decided to re-install Windows into a different folder on the same partition. And access this guys data that way. I wonder what it is Adaptec does exactly? Does it over write the Hard drive controller driver and then not restore it after it removes itself?

I'm trying to get him into using Nero so he doesn't install "incompatible" software again. He used to be a hardcore Mac user. He pretty much taught himself Windows 2000. I don't think he realizes there is such a thing as "incompatible" software.

Thanks,

You could try this - i havent personally because i use Nero ;)

if you are not able to start your computer in Safe mode:

Boot to the Win2K CD (or floppies). When the "Welcome to Setup" screen is displayed, press R, press C to start Recovery Console, and then type listsvc.

Log on to your computer, and then disable the following drivers by using the disable command:
Cdr4vsd
Cdrpwd
Cdudf

type exit when done, and then reboot.
After you acknowledge the Aspi32.sys error message, you can uninstall Easy CD Creator and DirectCD.

***The Aspi32.sys version 4.01 and the Cdr4vsd.sys files are loaded when you start your computer, and they are not compatible with Windows 2000.***

Try that out. Im wondering if it really works myself :)

Isn't there an FDISK equivalent for Windows 2000 that allows you to fix the MBR (MFT)?

Anyway, also there should be updated software to Easy CD Creator that will remove the Take Two software because of software issues. That might make things better for you in the long run should you choose to install it again. J.R. Juiliano

pbxman,

I tried disabling services in the recovery console but didn't know which ones applied to easy CD creator. I ended out just installing windows to a different folder on the same partition. I then let the user get his files off then nuked and re-installed Win2k. He wanted Easy CD creator back on:), so this time I installed it and applied the four patches and everything went fine.

I will take note of those drivers/services to disable the next time if it happens and let you know if they worked.

jrjuiliano,

I tried fixmbr at the recovery console. It did say it was damaged and repaired it. However, I was still unable to get into windows through either normal or safe mode. I was able to use the command prompt only.

Thanks everyone for your helpful advise,
