if I have two routers with serial ports can the following exist and be able to talk to each other. or must two routers always connect to each other within the same subnet?

router a s/1 192.168.7.1 255.255.255.252

router b s/1 192.168.8.1 255.255.255.252

Neighboring interfaces must have a common subnet.

silvercas,

If you want the link to talk to each other, they will need to be on the same subnet -

Router A - s/1 192.168.7.1 255.255.255.252
Router B - s/1 192.168.7.2 255.255.255.252

Or

Router A - s/1 192.168.8.1 255.255.255.252
Router B - s/1 192.168.8.2 255.255.255.252

Hope this helps!!

thanks for the answers, this is what I thought. so is what Im thinking not possible?

Not until IPv6 at least where two routers do not have to share the same common subnet. With RIPng, you can get around that.
