I wonder if anyone can help solve my problem which only occurs occasionally(at least where I am involved) but could have serious implications.

Within our company, we have a network spread over two sites running a combination of Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange. All mail goes through a server which then distributes the mail to the required machine(s).Every so often, when one user sends an e-mail to another user which the second user then replies to, the reply ends up in the inbox of a third user(myself) who had nothing to do with the subject being discussed. This has happened twice recently, both times involving the same two initial users. So far, the e-mails have not been particularly important but obviously I am worried that something confidential could end up in the wrong person's inbox. I have checked the message both times and there is no mention of my name. What can I do to solve this.

This is probably some problem with the server, but I can think of a couple client conditions that could do this depending on your setup. With the scenario you've explained, if the original sender has his client set with the wrong 'reply to' address this could happen. If the second person has some rule in effect to send you a copy, this could happen. Does the original send get the reply in addition to you, or are you the only one that gets the reply? Does your server have a 'catch all' function and could your account be the 'catch all' account? - AKA any unkown address would be delivered to you.

Thanks Smah. I think you have solved my problem

I checked and the original send did not receive the reply intended for him. When I examined the email that I had received more closely, I noticed that the recipients name was enclosed in single quotes. It looks as if it was typed incorrectly and my account must be the catch all account which is why I received the email.

Thanks a lot for your help. As always Tek-Tips has succeeded in coming to the rescue.
