OK I have a new DVD drive that says I need an E-IDE cable,, is that the same as an ATA100, or ATA133????

E-IDE is the name of the interface (also called Parallel ATA). ATA/100 and ATA/133 are examples of speed or thoroughput ratings of IDE.

Well,, my "old" ide cable,, recognizes the drive,, and display it in XP,, but it will not "burn",, hence the question.. So will an ATA100, or ATA133 cable "fix", the problem?? Or does it demand a different cable?

Probably. The E- signifies a cable capable of 100.
You old probably is a 40 conductor, the new should be 80 conductor with signal lines separated by ground lines.

I have been searching the web site.. it says the udma is 66. Which I have kind of loosely translated into ATA66. Which makes sense, since it is a newer dual density DVD drive, and would require the newer interface. Strange that Aopen does not include the cable, esp since it was the "retail" box.

A 40-wire cable is limited to ATA/33 speeds. ATA/66 is the rating on your drive, so you will need an 80-wire (actually called 80-conductor) cable.

And for others reading this thread, this is a perfect example of when you DO NEED an 80-wire cable for a burner. There are some DVD burners out there (one by Pioneer that I know of) that specifically states on the box/manual NOT to use 80-wire. But there are only a handful of exceptions like that out there, so in most cases like the one in this thread, you would want to use one.

And don't forget that there's a correct way and an incorrect way to install the 80 conductor cable.

With the 40 conductor you can connect it any way it fits as long as the stripe on the edge of the cable connects to pin 1.

On the 80 conductor cables, measuring the data cable from the middle connector, there's a long end and a short end.

The long end must connect to the motherboard, the short end must connect to the drive set to master, and the slave drive (if used) must connect to the middle connector.
