Hi all,

What would I do without this band of knowledgeable people ?

Using Google, in Preferences, selecting, "Open search results in new browser window", just produces a browser shell with an empty address bar and going nowhere. Clicking 'Stop' then 'Refresh' fills in the empty address bar and the page loads normally.

Not just Google, other sites with embedded Hyperlinks refuse to download, including the new windows update site.

In Outlook Express clicking on the Hyperlink on an inbox mail also produces an frame with an empty address bar.

I have tried everything I can think of .... Re-installing IE6 / Re-installing Windows / looking at all the browser options I can think of, etc.

My only recent activity was to download the new KAzaa Lite, though its hard to know if this has any bearing on the problem.

I am running W98SE / AVG anti virus / Outpost Firewall.

I recently had a Floppy borne virus my daughter brought home from school ! ( VBS Redlof ), This seemed to stay on the floppy and the virus scan says all clear.

I would much appreciate any clues or ideas on this problem as surfing is now a very dysfunctional experience !

Thanks.

Norman.

Howdy:

Try this

Start>Run Type in regsvr32.exe urlmon.dll (copy and paste the command if you wish) and press <enter>

After you see the confirmation dialogue, reboot.

In Tools, Internet options, Advanced, have you unchecked Reuse windows for launching shortcut ?

Hi Murray,

Good to hear from you, I wasn't sure if you survived the dawn shoot-out with Crusty !

I was impressed with the regsvr32.exe urlmon.dll fix but unfortunately no change here. Anything else in your armoury ?

Thanks too PAnderson "Reuse windows for launching shortcut ?" is now unticked, but I still have the problem.

I re-booted a couple of times to no avail.

Infuriating or what !

Norman.

Hello Norman

I feel certain that I read something bad about Kazaa a while ago, but can't for the life of me either remember exactly what it was, or find the article again.

However, I have just visited the German version of Tek-Tips and found many references. I wish my German was better, but I've had to rely upon a Beta translator.

From what I have gleaned, there appears to be a problem with Firewalls and Kazaa, and virii associated with some download sites. The talk is of Virtual Machine, which is also something to do with your floppy virus.

I'm fairly certain that one advice was to search your registry for this data/value explorer.scr and if you find it, delete it.

Wish I could help more. COFFEE.EXE missing - Insert Cup and Press Any Key.
Regards
Phil
Please tell me if the answer I gave was helpful or a bus ride out. Without your feedback I won't know.

Hi Crusty,

My registry has no mention of explorer.scr. I am itching to delete something !

Thanks again,

Norman.

Norm:

Try the following.. There is a difference from the first command

Type regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll, and then click OK. (Copy and paste the command)

When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded." message, click OK and reboot.

Murray

I have been struggling with this for a month and finally solved it! All it took for me is to extract oleaut32.dll from my c:\windows\options\install folder to c:\windows\system using the System Configuration Utility tool (See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 265371). Bingo, the popups work again. Must have been replaced by some errant program.
