yes indeed : you can see like this :
1 VCU board can transform 2B+D line into 8B+D (config 5 or 6)
We have sites like this in service and i must say that the speech quality is not optimal, but it works nice...
here is some more copy & paste from ALEX :
Capacities and Limitations
3.5.1 Capacities
One compression rate 4 -> 1 using the LD-CELP algorithm (ITU-T rec. G.728).
One D-channel on a voice compression board can handle 32 B-channels.
The D-channel on a BRA interface can handle 32 B-channels if the interface is initiated to handle voice compression individuals.
In each LIM it is possible to initiate 38 voice compression boards.
In each LIM it is possible to initiate 240 ISDN external line individuals, this resource is shared between BRA/PRA and VCU inputs. Note: That the VCU output and the signalling terminal on the voice compression board requires external line individuals.
3.5.2 Limitations
Voice channels using voice compression and voice channels not using voice compression must belong to separate routes.
A signalling terminal on a voice compression board and its associated B-channels must all be situated in the same LIM.
Synchronization fault cannot be detected when all VCU inputs are used for time slot switching.
The compressed channels can only be transferred over digital trunk line interfaces.
The board configurations 5 -10 are not supported by the VCU/1 board (ROF 137 5407/1) and the VCU/3 board (ROF 137 5407/3).
