Dynamic Disks

You need to convert your disks from basic disks to dynamic disks if you want to use the operateing system to do any of the following:
spanned volumes, striped volumes, mirrored volumes, or RAID-5 sets.
If you have a hardware raid system already in place then their is no need really to convert the disks.
