Whenever I log off, this error will appear.

It will also say

The application failed to initialize because the windows station is shutting down

I know dwwin.exe is Dr Watson. How could I find out which application is trying to start? I am concerned whether there is any malware trying to start at logoff.

Thanks!

What is Logoff like from Safe Mode? If OK, try eliminating a possible cause via this tool.

310560 - How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP

Do you have any Schedule Tasks or Scripts that might want to run at Logoff?

I see lots of recommendations here for programs like -

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

SuperAntispyware

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

You will need to turn DrWatson off to fix this bug...

In the Registry navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion

mark the following subkey and delete it:

AeDebug

reboot...

if you want DrWatson back on, for most people it is useless as you wont be able to discern what is what in it's error report, you will need to type the following in the RUN box...

drwtsn32 -i and hit enter...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

What's reason to disable Dr Watson? What if there is a reason for it to report error? I would like to know the reason before taking actions.

Anything could be causing the error. You can consider recent updates. Also consider any other changes you have made such as installed programs. Corrupted files or faulty programming can cause this too. Malware infection is a possibility.

To get further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on this site.

If you want the highly technical cause of the crash look in the Documents and Settings/ All Users/ Application Data/ Microsoft/ Dr Watson/ Drwtsn32.log

Find the entry that is relevant by date and time to the crash you are investigating. The exact cause of the crash is indicated by "FAULT ->" on the left of page next to line of code causing crash. This, if your as cluey as me, wont tell you much but you can use it to see if it is the same fault all the time, and further up the log you can find what processes and modules are running.

There is nothing in the drwstn32.log. Nothing in event viewer either related to this problem.

drwstn32 option "Append to Existing Log File" is checked. Is there any other option I have to check?
