Hi
I`m trying again to install a fresh copy of Vista to my
system. I formatted the drive with western digital setup
utility. I reboot and get the NTDR is missing. The vista
dvd will not bootup. The WD utility was on a CD and at
bootup it ran just fine. I can`t understand why the vista
won`t start.

Has the DVD ever booted? Is it recognized as a DVD drive in the Bios? What is the boot order set for in the Bios? It may be booting from the hard drive first instead of other media?

Hi
In Bios: the primary Master is set to Auto and the secondary Master is set to CD-ROM. In the boot order the CD-ROM is first then the HD. Both the western digital hard drive and the sony CD-ROM are listed there by name.
I used the western digital CD with the drive and it booted up just fine. The WD utility that formatts the drive asks if you want to format it for a certain OS. I wonder if it installs some files that are causing this config error.
I used this Vista DVD once before with no problems. It could be a bios error. I did upgrade my bios the other day.
I have been using XP since that bios upgrade and I haven`t seen any problems that could be caused by a misconfigured bios.

If you are dual booting (or attempting to), does XP see the DVD drive in Device Manager?

Hi
For some reason I have two listings in the device manager for CD-ROMs. One is a scsi CD-ROM which I don`t have as any hardware on my system. The second items shows my CD ROM. Should I delete or disable the scsi drive.

Whenever you remove (uninstall) anything in Device Manager, at the next reboot Windows will rescan your hardware and rediscover all attached hardware and try to load drivers for it. Therefore you shouldn't cause any problems by removing it.

Why is it saying you have this type of hardware in the first place, is it getting this information from the Bios in anyway?

Have you tried setting the Bios to the Safe Defaults.

I assume it is XP that is seeing this hardware, as you have not got Vista to install as of yet?

1. Vista does not have SCSI drivers yet, so manually have your SCSI drivers on a floppy, then install the drivers when ask to install devices...
2. You might also check as admin if C:\ is NTFS under Vista requirement.. most 3rd party formats do not work...
If the answer is No then simply type "format c: /f:NTFS" from the DVD

3. Unless you want to UPGRADE, Boot to DVD to install Vista.

4. Change the Primary to DVD and Secondary to HD.

xxman,

I had the exact same problem... turned out to be an unsupported modem. Remove all add-in cards and peripherals, just a single DVD drive set to Master.

After a succesful install of Vista, I reinstalled the known-working modem...Vista would not boot. No error message, just a black screen...same w/ Safe Mode, it just stopped during its driver list generation. After 20 minutes I just shut it down, fished through my boxes of PCI cards and got another modem, Vista started but did not have/could not find drivers, I bought a $6 newbie.

So, this leads me to believe that if you have any OLD hardware installed you may be experiencing the same problem.
