Hi All

I have a machine I am building with 4 DVD R/RW drives in it, I want to use this machine as a backup system. My Mail server has about 16gb (Lotus Notes Databases) of info on it and I want it to automatically backup to the backup computer including it to unattended automatically span to the 4 DVD-R/RW drives. Is there any software that will allow me to do this. I need this to be a reliable means of backup rather than tape. This info is needed to be kept and accessed for 10years plus (Tape is not that reliable).

Regards

And your thinking is DVD's are more reliable? Far from it.. In fact from what i've read they are less reliable then tape. They are highly susceptable to scratching and damage and you'd better check the shelf life on how long the data on a burned DVD lasts. Also considering technology changes over a 10 year time span you may very likely end up migrating all that data to some other median.

There's a reason people pay extra for true optical cartridges that have their own sealed enclosures to help protect them from scratching and other mishaps. Personally if someone came to me wanting to store important data for 10 years and the solution proposed was a DVD i'd fire them. You're backing up a notes server? Is this for SEC compliance? I sure hope not..
