I use windvd 3.1 to watch my favourite films.Everything was fine but lately I can't get any subtitles of any language. What's worse I may get an error message like windvd caused error in kernel 32 dll.
I suspect that when I switched to a geforce 4mx440 things started going wrong.
P.S I have a p4 1.8 256ram BUT I'm using WINME

Here are a list of video card that will work with WINDVD. If yours is not on the list it
a hit and miss thing.

Why do I need a hardware overlay in my graphic card?

Graphic cards that utilize a hardware overlay surface, common with nearly all graphic chipsets created since 1998, are needed to display video and are sufficient
to play back DVDs on supported CPUs.

Without a hardware overlay surface, demand on the graphic card increases and performance may be compromised. Even the fastest CPUs may not be able to
compensate for the lack of a hardware overlay surface. Cards that utilize software overlay surfaces will either fail to work or suffer from decreased performance
and video quality.

What is Hardware Motion Compensation?

Graphics chips with built-in Hardware Motion Compensation (HWMC) offload 20 to 30% of the CPU requirements for DVD software decoders. Please note
that the quality of the HWMC caries for different cards. Try turning on and off HWMC to examine the software vs. hardware quality. We recommend full
software decode for best quality when CPU power is adequate.

What is IDCT?

IDCT stands for Inverse Discrete Cosine Transformation. WinDVD has included support for hardware-assisted IDCT decode when it is built into the graphics
subsystem. As with hardware-assisted motion compensation support, hardware IDCT reduces the CPU load and processor requirements (by an additional 10 to
15%).

What is Alpha Blending?

DVDs allow up to 32 channels of graphic overlays, called "subpictures," to display additional user information (subtitles, captions, menus, etc.) over video. Each
subpicture contains up to 16 simultaneous colors and each color has up to 14 levels of transparency, plus opaque.

Alpha blending allows the graphic chip to set a level of transparency for each subpicture pixel as it was intended by the content producer of the DVD. The use of
Alpha blending allows subpictures to display the same as on dedicated DVD players.

Some graphics chips allow Alpha blending to occur in hardware; however, WinDVD can also use advanced software alpha blending to create the clearest,
smoothest subpictures and highlights available.

Thanks a lot for the info, but since my card (geforce 4MX440) is not in your list, what software should I use to
watch my favourite dvds?Could you suggest a couple?
Thanks alot again!
