I would like to thank those who helped solve my earlier dilema. I have gotten my computer up and running now but I cannot get the system to acknowledge the dvd drive. I tried to add on to my previous thread but to no avail so I had to start a new one sorry. Anyway. upon boot the green light on the dvd goes on, but i cannot open the drive. nor does my computer list it as a component in device manager, it will also not allow me to "add new hardware". Is there anyway of testing the drive itself? I have managed to get this computer up and running and this seems to be the last step...(yeah right!) Also I noticed that upon turning the system on until the windows desktop appears it takes alot longer than it did before....any ideas on that? mike

Here's a few things that you should check, if you DVD rom is the second CD reading device in your system you should make sure that one of your CDroms is master and the other is slave. Jumpers in the back of the drives are provided for making this selection.

Double check your ribbon connector to make sure that the red trailer is close to the power plug when pushed in. If the red trailer is positioned correctly you may find that it is not so where the ribbon connector is plugged into the motherboard. Proper orientation of this connector can be critical in most computer installations.

Good luck.

Having a network card installed but not physically attached to a network will slow you down.

Do you know:
- motherboard && BIOS info
- Operating System
- manufacturer of DVD
- where it is physically located in your system (i.e. - it's the primary slave with a Western Digital 15G as it's master, and the secondary IDE is empty)
- have you downloaded any drivers for it
- have you downloaded and installed any flashes for it
