Hi,

HP Pavilion Entertainment PC Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition.

When the computer starts no cd or dvd discs will work. So i go into Device Manager and on the drive right click and choose 'Scan for hardware changes' and the dvd drive works dead on. Now, when i restart the comptuter it is back to not working and the loop goes on and on. Have already uninstalled through device manager and restarted again as well as trying to update drivers but same problem.

In my computer it shows 'DVD Drive (D:)' when the drive is not working but after 'Scan for hardware changes' it also shows DVD RW Drive (F:) 'CD NAME'

Any ideas?

How long has this been happening? Have you uninstalled any programs recently? Any clues in Reliability Monitor?

These articles all seem to point to the same registry entry, maybe they can provide you with some help.

- CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive appears to be missing after you install Windows XP or Windows Vista Beta 2

- Your CD or DVD drive does not work as expected after you remove Digital Image Suite 10

- You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

Tried the middle one, as the other two didnt really apply, and no luck

It might pay you to try "IllogicallyLogical's" first link as the fix involving Upper and Lower Filters is well known to fix missing DVD and CD drives.
