After upgrading from 5.01a to 5.3 we experienced duplicate nsf files for people with long file names. Some of the files are created with a tildy and others are just the eight characters. Has anyone else had this problem or has anyone upgraded yet. We had dumped the server and started new. reloading from backup the nsf files. if we delete the filename with the tildy then they cant get to their desktop information. Comes up with error "Doc linc library not found". HELP...
Thanks...

this sounds like a OS problem rather than Notes installation problem. FAT filesystem does not support long file names. VFAT (an upgraded version of FAT) does, but in exact manner that you describe. for each file it would create two entries in directory, one with circumsized to 8.3 filename, another with the rest of filename. OS takes care of fooling applications to think that they deal with genuine long filenames.

the problem comes when an application accesses files around OS, which may be the case with you. then all that that app can see is "tildized" filename, which may cause problems.

an alternative would be to either not use VFAT (upgrade to NTFS) or avoid long filenames.

i'd go with NTFS upgrade.

good luck!
rzen
