Hi all,

I have this ongoing drama of having my workstations come up with the following error, whilst trying to access my server: "A Duplicate Name Exists on Network".
I have attempted everything, disabling wins, change workstation names, etc etc etc. And yes i do know that there are know duplicate names that exist.
My last port of call, was that i formatted the server. This still didnt resolve the problem. This leads me to believe that it is either a default setting loaded with windows 2000 server, which i have overlooked, a os issue associated with one of my workstations or some sort of hardware failure.
if anyone has any ideas or tips, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Usually this error is associated with inproper name resolution. For example, Say I set up a dns record for my server called server.domain.com and the netbios name of my server is called fileserver. If i try to browse to \\server.domain.com I will get the Duplicate Name error. Sames is true if you try to browse to \\localhost

I'm sorry I can't be more specific in my help, but I'd suggest you start with your name resolution. I've also seen there erors with loss of connectivity, perhaps check any hubs/switchs.

Also, if there are any other relevant error messages in the event viewer let us know.

Dan

Thanks,

the only problem is my dns naim is xxxx.com.au and my netbios is identical xxxx.

I guess i may have to try the switches.

Do you get this error every time you access the server? Or does it happen at random times? If it is random, it would suggest hardware problems. Try accessing it in various ways. For example try \\xxxx.com.au OR \\[you.ip.addy] OR \\xxxx OR \\127.0.0.1
See if there is any pattern to what works and what doesn't.

Quite strange actually. I can always connect if i am sitting on the server, to any computer i like. This suggests to me that, it is most likely not a hardware issue.
But i have one pc, out of 15, that connects everytime without a question. All pc's are running win2k pro.
I have tried all of the methods of access sugessted and none will work (excuse bad english).

Thanks for that,

CHecked that particular system and cant find any differences whatsoever. I have since moved the server location, and found that it functions correctly. That was yesterday afternoon. But this morning, back to its same tricks. Moved the server back to original location and still no go (this is a databas server, so i can turn it on and off when out of work hrs.). Maybe this is a coincidence, but do u think it could be a hardware fault, in relation to one of our switches or routers????

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe i am a bit slow, but does anyone understand this. It is part of the test that netdiag.exe does:
{warning} You dont have a single interface with the <00> "workstation service," <03> 'Messenger service', <20> 'wins' name defined.
Am i correct in assuming that it just means that i dont have wins installed????

Hello all,
I started having the same problem as ggreen79 on my home network of 2 servers and 3 workstations. I have been digging through the event viewer and I cant seem to find any relevant errors. I find errors showing that the workstation cant access the group policy stored on the server but that seems to relate back to "A Duplicate Name Exists on Network" issue.

Another post (thread96-394745) mentioned that his problem started after a windows update, his was similar to this problem. My issue started recently and was trying to track down if it stated after a windows update.

I am able to ping my servers and have a very basic router that seems to be working fine. Based on what I have seen this is not a hardware or router issue.

Hello All,
Koquito's link was able to fix my problem! I used that registry fix that is listed, Restarted my server and all the browsing works again!

I would like to know what keywords you used to find that MS KNowledge base article? Just for future reference because I searched through there for awhile.

thanks again:)
