Duplicate message id

One of my users uses a system which involves automatically generating emails to a number of users at the same time. In one particular instance, nine emails were requested but only seven were received. On inspecting the exchange log file it transpires that there were two pairs of messages with duplicate msgids, hence two were not delivered.

Does anyone know why duplicate msgids might be created?

Look at the application generating the emails. We had this same issue several years ago and found the (Unix) application was the root of the problem.
