Hi Everyone,

When working with duplicates, does it basically read the original and copy the same contents to the destination tape? So effectively, I have the same backup on 2 different tapes?

If that is the case, can I choose which tape to use during a restore or is NBU able to prompt me for one of the two tapes?

I read a little something about primaries and copies with the lowest #. Would I have to maybe expire my offsite copy to use my duplicate that I have onsite?

Not sure if I'm making any sense but I hope to get more familiar with this duplicating thing.

The technote I provided should answer your questions. Please don't resort to pre-maturely expiring images after you went top the trouble of creating them. The technote is very easy to follow and demonstrates both GUI and command line.

Just because the VERITAS documentation states a certain thing does not make it a fact and that is truth.

Yes, it reads data from 1 drive and copies to the other. The secondary copy should be stored offsite and primary (library copy) used for restores. Once the library copy is expired (if using different retentions for secondary) the offsite copy becomes primary.

The docs Stumpr recommended should guide you down the right track..

Thanks guys for the responses. That article did help me out quite a bit.

Always learning a little more with this software.

Thanks again!

I was able to take a restore image and duplicate it very easily. Then I found the image in the catalog and made it the new primary. Ran a restore and everything went well with the original tape off-site.

Thanks!!!
