When I click Start > Default Programs and scroll down to the section for Devices, I find the entry for the "hp photosmart 812" is listed twice. I like to keep things clean but I do not know how to delete the redundent entry. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the drivers and software for this camera, but the duplicate entry still exists. How do I delete it?

I forgot to mention that these are the AutoPlay Settings and that the version of Vista that I am using is Ultimate.

What type of file system does the storage memory use (NTFS, FAT32 or other), is there an inbuilt memory and an additional memory card? I ask this because the type of file system used makes a difference as to what gets listed under devices.

"AutoPlay: frequently asked questions" is a Help and Support Program title.

I am only guessing that if you have two storage areas you might end up with two listings for the same equipment under Devices.

Probably dead wrong, but it was only a guess.

Linney,

NTFS and built in memory. The list that I am talking about is the one I get when I navigate Start > Default Programs > Change AutoPlay settings and then scroll down to the Devices section where I find a duplicate entry for "hp photosmart 812."

Thanks,

Mel

If it has an additional card and built-in memory, do you get two listings if you remove any additional memory card, (reboot to check)?

Is the Device also showing up as a removable drive in My Computer?

What entries are there for ""hp photosmart 812" relevant to Devices in the Registry?

Linney,

I'm not sure what you mean by an additional memory card. The Device doesn't appear in device manager because it is not connected.

Some Digital Cameras In addition to a small numerical size Megabytes of built-in Flash Memory, also support the use of SD memory cards and MMC cards. Googling for the Specs on your camera results in the observation that your particular model only uses a memory card and has no built-in Flash Memory.

You mention NTFS as the file system (of the card?), I read this on one site, "To format the memory card on a XP computer, the setting on the computer must be changed to FAT16 from the default of FAT32" which indicates to me that your Memory Card file system should be FAT16 (known as FAT).

HP Photosmart 812 and 812xi Digital Cameras - Issues, Error Messages, and Solutions

From Help and Support program -

"AutoPlay only lists non-volume devices (for example, some digital cameras, video cameras, and phones). This is because these devices don't use a standard file system and AutoPlay cannot browse the contents of these devices to see what types of files they contain".

I would have thought your camera's memory, if formatted as FAT would show up in My Computer as a Removable Drive if it was using the FAT file system. Maybe it should be formatted after you have saved any pictures?

I made a mistake. No doubt you are correct about the format of the memory card. I thought you were asking about the computer memory.

Anyway, the camera and memory card are working fine.

My question is why does Windows Vista list the camera twice when I navigate Start > Default Progrrams > Change AutoPlay settings. The top of the screen shows Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > AutoPlay. It lists what AutoPlay does for all media and devices. Under Devices, it shows "hp photosmart 812" twice, which I don't understand.

I am guessing that something may have been entered into the Registry twice. When I do a RegEdit and search for 'hp photosmart 812", I find many entries and do not want to delete anything without knowing what I am doing.

I can send you a print image of the listing of media and devices for AutoPlay (a Word file on my hard disk) but have not been able to figure out how to attach it to this message because I can't find a way to browse to the file.

I don't think an image will make any difference as I can follow what you are saying easily enough, unfortunately knowing the answer is not as easy.

If you have a problem accessing a file, look at Permissions, but that is another story, perhaps a new thread and posting is in order for additional problems. If you just want to link an image to a thread try these.

Do you have your camera listed as a Removable Drive in My Computer?

This program may fix things if AutoPlay is faulty, it might be worth a try -

Autoplay Repair Wizard - Autofix.exe

I wouldn't bother trying to second guess the Registry, that is fraught with danger, if you don't know the actual relevant location. What you could do is use System Restore to go back before you installed the camera, if it was installed only recently, and revert the Registry that way.

Have you got another computer. or a best friend, that would allow you to setup your camera on their machine, and see if the problem happens on a different machine?

You best bet might be to try the HP Photosmart Forum.
