On a Gateway G6 w/ 266PII there is a Fatal Exception Error that reads: 016F:BFF9A25B. It can only start in safe mode. Attempting to run MSINFO32.EXE or SFC results in "cannot find or one of it's components is missing". SCANREG/RESTORE results in "bad command".
Safe boot has indicated error in A:\CDROMDRV.SYS, and, error in CONFIG.SYS, line 3.
The system had a faulty CDROM that did not get replaced BEFORE the fatal error showed up. It has been replaced and the system has recognized it but cannot find a driver. My repair strategy seems to have to work without the CDROM. Any ideas?

Boot to safe mode and remove the CD driver in Device Manager. Reboot and Windows should autodetect your new CD. I can not imagine a new CD that is not PNP so you should be fine.

I did that after installing the CDROM. The system did autodetect the new unit but I still get messages implying that no driver is available. What else can I try?

Pull the line 3 from the config.sys. You shouldn't need any drivers with the new drive. Something isn't adding up here. Your error message is reporting calling a driver from the a: drive. Evidently your previous drive needed a driver but it was looking on a: so there should have been errors then too.
I suspect that your previous drive needed drivers so it could be found. Now that it has been removed the driver is reporting that the drive is missing. Ed Fair
