Used to be that the only real choices were Intel or Tyan. The Tyan Tiger still exists as the best budget dual board you can buy, but the Thunder's good.

For a pair of processors to be able to work together, they must support SMP (Symmetrical Multi-Processing, and be of the same stepping.

Generally there are 3 processor families that "do" SMP; Pentium Pro, Pentium II, !!! and 4 Xeon, and AMD Athlon MP.

However, I have also seen dual and quad pentium (1) boards and dual PII/!!! (ABit BP6). I have not managed to locate a dual P4 board, hoewever.

Addendum, since you ask - I am running a dual Pentium Pro machine that I picked up for £50 on e-Bay. It's an IBM PC 365, so came pre-fitted with an Intel board. I use it as either a Windows 2000 server or a Linux server running my home DNS. CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk
