Greetings:

I've been meaning to ask this for quite a while. I have a dual boot system with Win98se and WinXP Pro SP1. On the boot screen, if I press F8 I can select whether I want to start up in safe mode, but the options in that screen seem to work only with WinXP, so I end up booting XP in safe mode when what I wanted was to log into Win98 in safe mode.

Is there a way to start Win98se in safe mode... am I missing something?

E.

Choose the Win98 Boot option, while holding down the Ctrl key until the Win98 boot completes (in this case, in Safe Mode).

hi bcastner;
just me - from the 95/98 forums spreading my wings a bit and exploring mildly unchartered waters [smile]
fwiw; (and you're probably well aware with using 98).
When pressing and holding CTRL you'll get the Startup Menu from which you can choose 1-6 or 7 possible startup options (depending on Networking components) - one being SafeMode.
When pressing and holding SHIFT is when Win98 will auto boot fully into SafeMode. I frequently use a similar procedure when I have (leave) a bootable CDROM in the drive (as my BIOS is set to cdrom as first boot device). I'm given a prompt of 2 choices on boot. (with the default going to HDD after 10 sec.)
[1] Hard Disk
[2] CDROM
as soon as I choose HDD...I immediately press and hold the CTRL key for the Startup menu to appear, and choose my boot choice style.

TT4U,

The rule in the XP Forum is to roll out the red carpet.
Then later cut you off at your knees.
