I just switched from one hard drive to another. I put the second one in and put Win 2K on it so I could copy all my files from one to the other. Now the original drive is removed, but I still have the boot option for both. Is there any easy way to get rid of the one that isn't there anymore?

Right now I have my default set to the one that works, so it's just aesthetics I'm concerned with here.

You can do it 1 of 2 ways: Easy or hard.
Easy:
Right click on my computer go to properties. then advanced then start up and recovery. In system start up UNCHECK the box that says Display list of operating systems for...
then hit ok. You should no longer have the boot menu.

Before you do this next option make sure you create an Emergency Repair Disk.
Hard:
Go to start menu then run. type: attrib boot.ini -r -h -s
then hit enter. Next open up notpad and go to file then open. In the file name box type boot.ini and hit enter. In the boot.ini look for the ARC name for the other OS and delete it. Next close notepad and save your changes. Then go back to start then run and type:
attrib boot.ini +r +h +s
then hit enter. then reboot.
After you get back to windows UPDATE your ERD. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

I have a similar issue where I had to install a fresh copy of windows 2000 onto my machine (under \WINNT2) because some software I had installed had changed my winlogin registry key and corrupted my msgina.dll file.

I've managed to fix the problem so can now login using my original Win 2000 installation but now I want to get rid of the additional install. I can follow your steps to remove it from the boot option screen, but is it possible to remove the files from my system as well? I assume it is more complicated than just deleting the \WINNT2 directory.

thanks

Not really more complicated. Once you remove the secon from the boot.ini and delete the \Winnt2 folder, you also need to go to \Documents and Settings and get rid of the corresponding Administrator, All Users, and Default Users folders. They will have the either the Computer Name (of that install) nad or the Winnt2 name behind them. If you need more help just ask.

Thanks. First I went into boot.ini and renamed the Win 2K's to Win 2K 1 and Win2K 2 so I knew which one was good and which one was bad. Then I took out the bad one. I figured it would be in the boot.ini file, but I couldn't figure out how to view it. I thought choosing "View all files" in the folder options let you see "ALL" the files, but I guess not. Thanks James.
