Intention is to have 95a/DOS 6.22, 98SE/DOS 6.22, and ME as 3 partitions choosing under boot magic. Ran this way for at least a year with P100 , but have recently upgraded to P200. (maybe a better word would be changed)
Loaded the 2nd partition on active, visible partition with DOS then a hard drive install of SE and enabled BootMenu=1 in msdos.sys.
System starts, IO.sys gives the choice, I choose #7 (previous OS) ,get a message that system is booting with the previous version and it hangs with hard drive accessing.

Have loaded partition 1 with DOS/SE and compared the system files looking for corruption or differences, but can't find any. Partition 1 boots either as expected when active or under boot magic. Partition 2 loads SE but fails on 6.22.

Anybody have any insight to what I may have overlooked?

Looks like the filesize is correct.
Can you make the windows version as io.sys, msdos.sys & command.com. And for the dos version rename it to io.dos, msdos.dos, command.dos
If you have other file other than that (w40), delete/move it. Try to boot the system

Btw, I can understand why you want all of windows version exist on your system. Maybe you want it for troubleshooting. But I think cheesefish has a good point for the last one, why you still want DOS622 in W98SE ? Just curious :)

Building the system with or without the compression files makes no difference.

Will play with the namechanges tonight with the new build.

Use of DOS is a convienence in data/program exchange under the particular setup I have. Easier when I am in DOS on another dual mode system if I am in DOS on this one while networking the stuff across.

Final resolution:
On this particular M/B multi-mode boot 98/dos fails on the DOS choice on other than partition 1.
Multi-mode boot 95/DOS works on all choices on all partitions.
Ended up enlarging the ME partition to hold it.
Now have 98/95/ME for future use.

Thanks for the comments and help. It has been fun in a S&M sort of way.

Edfair....just to follow-up......

In thinking I understand.....
98/dos.......needs to be on First Partition....and that seems to be the way you have it now...

Are you aware that ME doesn't offer a Dual Boot Mode......
you probably are well aware of this.......just thought I'd mention it in case, somehow, this was interfering with your setup the way you like

I've been reading a bit about ME and they've gutted a lot of options available in 9x......

Different M/B allowed 98/dos on 2nd partition. And I was trying to duplicate the original. I move M/Bs around enough that I can't remember for sure but I think the original was a FIC with P100. And I moved it to 200 for some unknown reason, but I had one. Sometimes I have trouble after the fact why I do things. Sorta like forgetting that you wanted to drain the swamp while you still have alligators chomping at you.

Yeah, boot menu is restricted. Not only did they gut the options but they bloated it tremendously. Think I was short over 100mb on install space on the 500mb. Haven't looked at the difference but I could put the 130mb SE install stuff and still install SE in the 500 on another partition.

If the problem mobo has Smartdrive, maybe try disabling it as with multiple OS there may be a glitch between smart and vcache? Just a thought.
