drop menu-how to remove contents

Hi All,
when you right click on your win98se desktop, and go to NEW, i have a crap load of shortcuts to various programs. It takes a while for the contents of NEW to show.
How can i speed up the appearance of the NEW menu and how can i remove all the shortcuts in there?
