Hi Guys,
We have a server connected to a SCSI tape drive that uses Legato for back ups. Earlier today my co-worker rebooted the server with out rebooting the SCSI tape drive. Now when I try to mount the tape for the backup I get a message box that says: "Server (server name): open error: drive status is"

That's it. That one line and the OK button. Is there anyway to get the tape drive to come up again with out power cycling the server? It's a production box hosting live data with almost continuous access.

Thanks!

This should not be a problem. Recycle the power an the drive and retry the operation.

Did somebody re-activate RSM?
Does NW's tapeexer utility work?
Does a Windows backup work at all?

We just wound up power cycling the server again this morning. It looks like we have to make sure that there is not a tape in the drive when the server power cycles or else the drive will be unusable. After digging in a bit deeper it looks like it is something with Windows and/or the the drivers. The tape drive was appearing in the computer manager, but was not accessable (could not mount, eject, etc...).

An inserted tape should not harm at all as this can always happen (power fail, for example).

I agree with you that it should not be an issue, but for some reason if that server powers up with a tape in the drive, the drive will be unusable. If we power up the server with out a tape in the drive, then stick a tape in it once the server is loaded, it works fine.
