I am getting ready to try and start a web design business on the side, I have heard that Dreamweaver 4 is the best thing to use, so I investigated a little and found that there is a Dreamweaver 4 and a Dreamweaver 4 Ultra Dev, and I was wondering which one is better, I want to get the best, with the most options. Also what are fireworks, Everyone is probable laughing, but I don't know much at all, but I am gonna learn. Please if you could help. Thanks, also where do you suggest is the best place to purchase the program. Thanks

Dreamweaver is made for web design. look and feel.

UltraDev is tailored more towards development. nuts and bolts.

Fireworks is Macromedia's image editor that dovetails beutifully with DW and makes doing images, and complicated menu scripts and many other tasks a complete snap.

My personal preference (take it or leave it) is to do my design with Dreamweaver, development with MS InterDev, and all image editing with FW. This combination works great for me.

If you're a student (or know a student) then a college bookstore is by far the best place to buy software. You can get fully functional educational versions at bargain basement prices, but you fall into some legal issues if you start using it for commercial purposes.

If you are planning commercial use, then check out discount online software distributors... just go to and do a search. I'm sure you can find some deals out there.

i'm using a development environment that references a JVM. but Dreamweaver sets up its own JVM, thus conflicting with my environment. is there any way to choose which JVM that DW references or to get rid of DW's JVM completely?

May I suggest one thing, if you're going to purchase DW4, look into DW MX or the Studio.

DW MX + Fireworks MX [2thumbsup] The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made.

Yep, I got Studio MX and have used it all (well except Freehand, but I don't know anybody that uses it ;~))and love the way it all integrates well, using Flash,DW and FW together has never been easier.
That said, there are still MANY bugs in DW MX, notably running it on a W2K platform and an issue with clogging up Access lockfiles, but that aside....

Let's bring it down a notch...

Dreamweaver - used to make 'static' websites - sites without forms, e-commerce that sort of thing.

Dreamweaver Ultradev - used to make sites including sites with dynamic data - database results, form entry, e-commerce etc.

MX is the newest version of Ultradev. Dreamweaver is no longer made as a stand alone product.

MX/Ultradev have no real competition. For static sites GoLive is a viable alternative. I use MX, Fireworks, Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator.

I would recommend writing your first few sites by hand coding HTML. It will give you a better understanding of what is happening and how to manipulate pages. I'm weak in that area and it slows me down from time to time (although my overall production using MX keeps my masters very happy.)

Dreamweaver has nothing to do with making dynamic website. Dreamweaver is an HTML editor that make it easier for anyone to code HTML.

Active Server Page has everything to do with making static page become dynamic.

Ultradev and MX can both generate code, using higher level interfaces, to create dynamic pages. The code can be ColdFusion, .asp, php and a few others - your choice.

Using UD or MX a person can create some fairly sophisticated sites without knowing anything about HTML, .asp or whatever.

And I really wouldn't call Dreamweaver an HTML editor - it is more than that. Peace

Did anyone notice Zygo never reponded.

I think perhaps he/she realized there might be a bit mor to setting up as a developer than previosuly thought.
