I have a persistant ADSL connection to the internet via a netgear router for our LAN. I have installed exchange 2000 on a windows 2k server. Currently our ISP collects all our domain email and places it in a mail box on their server which we download using a vpop3 server. The vpop3 server distributes the mail to our 100 users.

Because the mail is being sent to our ISP mailbox the exchange server is not receiving any mail. I want to turn off the vpop3 server and replace it with the exchange server. Can I configure exchange 2000 to poll our ISP email account and download our companys email??? This would be very handy although I dont think it is how exchange is supposed to work.

I am under the impression that an MX record should be set up to send our mail to our router which should then forward the mail to our exchange server.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kenny,

Hate to disappoint you, but I don't have the answer, only the same problem. If you get a working answer, can you pass it along to mhein50@hotmail.com. I posted a question very similar to yours and will reciprocate if I get an answer.

Good luck.

I too, am facing the same problem. The IS Manager before me set up "internal" and "external" email. External is routed through our ISP, and internal is based off of our Exchange 5.5 server. It has come time for me to upgrade 5.5 to 2000 (and it will be on a new domain) and I want to eliminate the ISP and our pop mail in this process.
If you guys hear anything, please let me know.
Thanks!

Hi folks,
I have the same problem as you three but I've found a little program that might be helpful. It's called POPBeamer you can find a description and download it here: I think this program manages the access to the pop3 server for excange do you have any ideas how the smtp access works in exchange server? Do you know how I can set up exchange server for ms outlook?

Thanks a lot for your help

It sounds like you all have your ISP hosting mail for your domains. Usually in this scenario, each client using Outlook would collect mail from their own individual email box and download it, there would be no need for am Exchange server, and they send mail directly from outlook.

If you want to move to hosting your mail for your domain, then you must add an MX record to your DNS that points to either your firewall which in turn NAT's the address to the exchange server inside your firewall, or you point it to a the public IP of your exchange server sitting in a DMZ.

In Exchange 5.5 internet mail is handled by the IMS or Internet Mail Service, formally the Internet Mail Connector. Its very straightforward, make sure you read the articles on on how to secure your exchange server from relaying.

In Exchange 2000 internet mail is handled by the virtual SMTP server. Its different from 5.5 but not terribly complex.

There may be 3rd part tools, like POPBeamer that can forward pop3 mail to your exchange server, but I am not familiar with them.
