Double Clicking on Icons just refreshes the desktop

Strange problem...Windows XP Home Ed...Last couple of days when double clicking on any desktop icons or trying to open My Computer or Control Panel, the desktop just refreshes itself and won't open anything.

This is followed by an error saying the Active Desktop has been refreshed (basically the background of the Pc goes white..)

Anyone seen this before? I'd REALLY like to avoid a re-install of the OS if i could...

Yes.

If malware destroys an .EXE and/or .ICO file association.

Download and apply these fixes:

Fix EXE files:

Download "exefix_xp.com" and run it:
Download "UnHookExec.inf" then right-click the file, Install:

Fix ICO and LNK files:

Download, unpack and run:


Reboot.

Then see FAQ608-4650
