Dos Prompt Comand.com not Working Urgent

I have a Win98 computer that I need to clone the Hard Drive but when try to open a dos window the screen goes blank and the machine locks up.
I have replaced the comand.com and reloaded win98 but there is still no window opening.
The old hard drive is coming apart as we speek so every time i try something it may me the last time it spins up. What am i missing or what do i need to try next?????

This may not work but give this a try if you haven't copy the command.com file to a floppy and try to run it from off of a floppy and see if it works. Also if that doesn't work can you reboot to dos and do what you need to do from there. It should boot to dos, or when your booting up take a windows 98 boot disk and boot to dos. I hope this may help.
