I am working on a Novell server invironment with Win 98 and Win 95 workstations.

We run a ms-dos menu program from a mapped drive on the server. When users execute the shortcut on their workstation it executes the .bat file on the server and they get a menu of various programs to run.

Here's the problem. On some of the machines the program selected executes fine, on other machines, which are configured the same, most even having the same hardware, the screen goes blue after selecting a program and then returns you to the menu selection screen. Anyone have ideas as to why this could be happening? No error messages are given.

When an item is selected from the menu, the menu program will probably read some information from support files.
(Maybe these files have names ending with .INI , .OVL ,
.DBX ....) The files may be residing in the same (server-)
directory as the menu program itself. Maybe, on some of the
machines, if there are local configuration files in current
directory, these files are used instead of the mapped files.

Thanks PAnderson, I would like to run with your idea but am not sure how to verify that this could be the cause. Any suggestions on how I can do this to find the specific problem files quickly?

When the supervisor edits or rearranges the menu items, one or more configuration files are changed. If you have no
description of the program, you can search for files changed in the actual period, and thus get an idea of
which files are used by the menu program. Next, search
for duplicates of the files on the local machines,
especially if the menu program has been installed locally
before it became a server application.
