Don't Have Java on WinXP SP1 and Need It

Good evening. I discovered a few days ago that we do not have Java (Sun) on our 4-month-old Windows XP. And I am aware of the Microsoft/Sun Microsystems law suit, etc., etc. Tried to download MS Java Virtual Machine from some recommended site. Could not install because it could only "be installed over an existing MS JVM." Downloaded Java from Sun's web site. Could not install because "you must change internet connection proxy settings to install."
Great! ...problem is you can't do it with a dial-up connection! Does anyone know how I can get it downloaded and installed without all this hassle? Thanks, RobertBC

and choose the second one: Windows (Offline Installation) or the manual one from

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/manual_download.jsp

To marcs41. Many, many thanks for your post/response yesterday to my question re Java! Took your instructions today and downloaded and installed the 14.5 MB Java.
Worked like a charm! I now have Java, thanks to you.

As info, people in another forum and also my PC
manufacturer could not get me to the installed
Java with their suggestions. etc. So, I salute you!
