Hi

probably a simple question. I have been asked to take over a ten pc network. The PC's are all running on a workgroup and are attached to 2000 server running active directory.

Can a workgroup talk to a domain?

thanks

Ian

A workgroup isn't a single entity like a domain is. In a workgroup, all machines are peers, and maintain local user groups. In a domain, the DCs maintain user accounts.

In order for a user in the workgroup to access resources on a domain, there needs to be a domain account for that user.

The best solution would be to migrate everything to the domain and eliminate the workgroup.

If you have your machines on a workgroup, then they are not part of the domain, soforth you really don't have a "domain" so to speak, just a Domain Controller. You may aswell just join all the machines to the domain and scrap your workgroup.

Hope this Helps.
