Hi

I have a Windows 2000 Server (no supprise there) I have run dcpromo from another Windows 2000 Server, but when it asked for the new domain details, it gives me a error........

The domain "example.com" is not an Active Directory domain, or an Active Directory domain controller for the domain could not be located.

I have upgraded an old PDC to the new 2000 DC and I has Active Directory running (you have to), so heres my question.

Does Windows 2000 Server use DNS to find the DC if it does, how does it find the DC? problem I see with DNS is this, our website is and our domain is example.com how would I put the domain and the DC into DNS.

Hope that makes sense

Simon

Active Directory NEEDS DNS. That is the only way it will work properly.
As far as setting up DNS all you will need to do is add a host entry for points to the external IP of your website. It's to late now but you could have used .local instead of .com for your internal domain :-)

Hi again Mr Cool

Not to late I hope, I still have a number of BDC's that I could upgrade to PDC, then kill my new 2000 server (nothing on it) then rebuild my new server as NT again, and then Upgrade it again, using the domain, simon.local.

Sound good??

Simon

You can build a clean install with WIN2K using the "UPGRADE" CD
heres how
1. Boot from the CD
2. Early in the installtion you will be prompted to insert your NT cd to verfiy you have a previous product.
3. Countine with a full installtion of Win2K.
