I am having problems joining a Domain with a brnad new Dell Computer.

The NIC is an Intel Pro/1000 network Connection. I have assigned a valid IP Address and tried to join a domain through My Computer Properties.

Everytime I try to join it comes up with

The following error occured validating the name (DOMAINNAME)
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be conatacted.

I have changed the net cable as I am sharing a Hub with my PC. My computer is working fine but just cannot connect to the Domain.

Any ideas, have I missed something this is infuriating. I have used the INtel Diag tool to test the NIC card and its working fine it passed all tests. I have checked the microsft compatibility chart and the card is supported under Win2K.

ANy help or advise is greatly appreciated as i have three more to install after this one.

I assume you are using static IP in your environment and not DHCP??

I would try the following:

(1) Join the workstation to a "workgroup" first. Reboot
(2) Check to make sure the computer name is not duplicate
name on the network
(3) After reboot try and join again to the "Domain"
(If above steps fail)

(4) Check your IP Address settings again. Make sure you
have the correct IP Address, subnet mask, default
gateway. Also make sure you have correct DNS settings
(5) Try pinging to the router (Default Gateway) from a
command line (I.E ==>ping 192.168.x.x (whatever the
Gateway address is). If you get a good ping than
your settings are probably correct. If you get
"Request time outs" than something else is wrong.

Try the above steps to see if they work. If not post your results here to see if we can troubleshoot further.

Thanks for that
Right

I joined a workgroup
The Computer name is unique
I rebooted and then tried to join the domain, same problem

I checked the static Ip Address was correct (I also ping'd the address to see if it was free.)

All the Ip settings are correct

I then tried pinging the new machine from mine but got a timeout

I tried pinging the gateway from my machine but that also fails.

I am starting to wonder if there is a NIC driver problem!!

Seems like you have a connect (ip settings) or a auth (authentication) problem. Good advice from zoeythecat but try this!

1. make sure you can ping the primary DNS or AD server!
2. Make sure you have File and Print Sharing checked in ip configuration.
3. Rename the pc and try to joining the pc again.
4. Double check to see if the system has an account on server.

I have now had success joining the Domain
It prompted me for a sign on and password with enough privilidges to join the domain. It then said I needed to reboot

I have since rebooted
I have tried to sign in as myself changing the LOG On TO to our domain name. Pressed enter and get the following error

The system cannot log you on now because the domain is not available.
But it is as I am using my machine.

Also try and connect a laptop or another computer to this same data connection. Maybe there is a connection problem coming out of that data port. Try a different data port as well

tried a new port and a new cable same problem.
I am using an 8 port hub. My machine is connected and working fine, so is a collegues. but this new one just does not want to play. I have even tried using my cable still no joy.

hi
I have exact same problem. we are a group of 15 people. only one is having a problem connecting to the domain.
everybody is connected to the domain, except this one, which says in workgroup.
when i try to put the same settings from other computer i get the same errors as mentioned. For your surprise this machine is dell too.
i tried to reboot it, logged on as administrator and then tried to change it, but no luck,
i m connecting to the server machine directly by giving its ip and then mapping it.
so i tried the things that where previously mentioned.
What next should i do?
thanks

Stressed Techie,

You have tried a different port in the hub? Have you also tried to bypass the hub completely and plug directly into the dataport? Can you also give an idea on what your Network Settings are (Don't have to give exact info). Have you tried a different IP Address? Have you tried pinging to your ROUTER?

Karsh,

Only suggestions I would have are from what has been noted from this forum. Anyone else?

Zoey

Karsh stay tuned I am in communication with a techy right now

Your Dell wouldnt be an Optiplex GX260

OKay Further to my emails

I have now checked the Event Viewer
This is waht is appearing

No Windows NT or Widows 2000 DOmain Controller is available for domain (BLAH BLAH) The following error occured There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.

And an MRxSmb error

The master browser has recieved a server announcement from the computer SERVER that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NETBT_Tcpip The master Browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

I am totally in the dark as to waht this means

Cheers

Just to recap though. I still believe it has something to do with the IP Address you are giving this. I know you Pinged this IP Address and this should be free but maybe there is something else being overlooked. Does this static IP Address have to be added to a firewall to allow you access? I know in my environment we use DHCP but for SOME STATIC (Not all) we have to add this computer name and IP Address to the firewall to allow access. Just to ask again if you are able to ping to the router from this workstation? If you can't than you have to troubleshoot this from the IP Address side. You also said you could not ping this from another workstation. Another thought, have you checked your network settings to make sure you have the correct Protcols. I'm sure you have checked all this and you have compared to other computers. Just trying to add anything I can think of. If you are having problems with this PC connecting directly to an ethernet port (that is a good port) than you should be able to get a connection. One thing to check (and I'm sure you checked this) is to make sure in Device Manager that the card is not "Disabled".

Let us know how you make out. This is becoming interesting (and frustrating for you i'm sure)

aright i need to know one more thing. this is the problem with the same machine. when a user logs on it has username, password and log on to options.
i dont get the log on to option. i tried the button which says OPTIONS, but didnt work.
so how i m suppose to get that option ?
the other thing is when i reboot the machine, it says duplicate user exists.
i checked in the AD, there are 2 daves, but both have different user name and password. i also tried to create a new user and add tht to tht " machine ", but still it doesnt let me add the domain, neither i can map the network drive.
i m totally lost.
as u said thecat its getting frustrating now. :)
thanks
