Domain joining problem

When I try to join an NT4 domain from my XP pro laptop, i get an error teling me that the domain controller for the domain could not be found. Digging deeper I found that this was because the DNS server actively refused my connection and so wouldn't supply the record for the domain controller.

Anybody seen anything like this ?
