I have installed a new server , made it a PDC of it's own new domain. I have since been instructed that the machine SHOULD just be a member of a workgroup with the same name. I do not see an option to change the domain back to a workgroup. Am I screwed?

Right click my computer and select properties, then go to network identification and at the bottom see if there's a button to select workgroup. (I'm looking at a pro machine, not a server.) Also, is it an NT box or W2K? Have you run dcpromo? Glen A. Johnson

If it is a W2K server you will have to run DCpromo and demote it.

Gotta nice one over here.
We have 4 buildings through the Netherlands, gonna have direct connections to one building, en there will be a 2Mb connection with the internet. We have all y2k servers and workstations.
4 times Fileserver y2k
1 exchange y2k
1 proxy y2k
1 SQL y2k
1 webserver y2k
50 Workstations y2k
pretty overdone, but I like it.

Anyways.
I have installed everything tested it, made it work perfectly, VPN is there, converted all existing data imported all exchange stuff and all user stuff mailboxes etc.. then I got this message: One building will be closed to spare costs... Planning the stuff all over again, next thing is this. We have the main DC here in this Building but not placed Yet, now we are trying to place a FS first, but having problems with the roaming profiles, because that use to be routed to the DC and allotta other problems. Discoverd how to solve that but, How do I momentarally change this FS one to DC, and when the final config is placed, undo that promo, and make th FS over here DC again?
Or two DC's? Something like it makes me feel nice when one off the two crashes that NO function is lost... make the FS over DC again...possible?

If the other w2k machines are stand alone servers, run dcpromo on the one you want, (Or all if you want) and they will all be dc's. There is no such thing as pcd's and bdc's like in nt4, with dc's, all servers pretty much think they are equal. Glen A. Johnson

Looks like that may do it. I wasn't aware of that utility since I don't configure servers much. Thanks for the help.

Make sure you have good backups first. Been there, done that and it's not pretty. Glen A. Johnson
