I want to remove our dc (win2003) and start installing a new machine because it is more powerfull. The server is runnin exchange, dns, dhcp.

We have a backup domain controller running that can take over at anytime (dns en dhcp). Not exchange.

When i remove the machine can i simply promote our bdc(2003) to dc ? Or is there anything else i should be looking at.

When the new dc server is ready the only thing i have to do is to promote it back to dc. So if i'm wright it will take
over the information from the bdc. Install exchange.

I hope there will be no need to rejoin pc's.

Our dc is called exchange all outlook cliënt connect under
this name. When i install another pc it will be under another name. Is there a way i can leave the name in the outlook cliënt and remap it to the new server using dns.

everything that maps to exchange should go to new pc name.

Generally it's not recommended to join a new DC with the same name as an old DC. It might be a better idea to build the new DC with a new name and join it to the domain then transfer all of the FSMO roles accross to the new server.

Alternativly you could transfer all of the roles to your current second DC then remove the old box, you could them join your new box with a different name.

Whichever way you decide you need to avoid removing your current DC before you have transfered any FSMO roles it may hold.

I'm not sure how this will affect Exchange so it might be worth asking here forum955
