I'm just taking a poll.

We operate a network of Definity PBX's (all MV1.2). Each has it's own set of dedicated DID numbers that translate into specific 5-digit numbers for UDP across the network.

Each location has it's own Intuity Audix (R5.1). This network is in the DC area so it crosses 7 local numbering plan areas (NPA's or area codes; DC=202, MD=240/301/410/443, VA=703/571).

Does your company allow internal users to take their telephone number with them if they move from bulding-to-building (even though each building has a unique DID/UDP range already established)?

Thanks for responding! WHCARon

Nope.

It's just like the phone company. When you change towns, you change numbers.

In my company when you change buildings, you change numbers.

Ditto here.

If a person moves WITHIN a building, they take their number with them. If they move to another building, they get a new number that is assigned to that site.

You could utilize call forwarding or bridged appearences to make it appear that a number has followed an individual from one location to another, but I wouldn't offer this solution to everyone; only highly-placed individuals who kick up a (large) fuss about changing their phone number.

My company let's everyonte take their number, no matter where they go! As you can all figure, it's a NIGHTMARE!

We used DCS to connect 3 sites when our corporate hq outgrew a building. After hearing some UDP horror stories, we informed management that it was not "workable" to move extensions between buildings.

WHCARon,

I do not see any reason not to take your number with you.
In other words, it is possible. To bad you don't have centralized voice mail. It would be best to be on the local audix system than remote. Are the networked Definity's utilizing DCS?

It should not be a nightmare if the person implementing the UDP is familiar with programming and keeps track of numbers that get moved around.

As one person mentioned, some companies only let upper management keep their extension and DID number (but then you could keep the DID number and assign a new extension number within the local dial plan they are moving to.

To me, it should be no big deal, but I work on Definity's for a living.

Good Luck with whatever decision is made.
