I'm administering a system consisting of a Windows 2000 server and 10 workstatins. 5 of the workstations run Windows 2000 Professional while the other half runs NT 4.0 Workstation.

Everything have been running safe and sound with only small changes the last year. But then only a few days ago someone was making a upgrade on the Visma Micro 80 program. I originally installed the program on the 2000 server and made it avavible on two NT 4.0 workstations, each wired up to a separate modem.

One of the things this guy from Visma did was installing a Windows 2000 patch soon to be included in SP3(q291244). W"hat he did wrong was before he installed it on the server he tried to install this patch on the NT 4.0 workstation originally ment to operate Visma. The following day this workstation went crazy, and since it's still been so.

After restarting this machine now comes up with the following messages "services.exe - entry point not found" and "tapisrv.exe - entry point not found". Looking in the event wiewer every error seems to involde RAS. Event IDs are 7024 and 20032. I have tried to replace involved files and to reinstall SP6a with no success. I am unable to access services or to uninstall RAS in any other way.

I'm looking forward to know if this error hang together with the running of a W2K patch on a NT 4.-0 system and how I can fix this.

Does the patch actually show up in add/remove programs? If so, I'd try to uninstall it - if not I'd suggest reinstalling NT.

You might get away with doing a repair from the NT Workstation CD - this should replace the incorrect files. The only thing you will have to do then is reinstall your latest SP.

That engineer needs shooting by the way! Make sure Visma are aware! -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

I agree with TheLad. Shoot the technician. Unless the patch was specifically for non operating system patches, it shouldn't be even THOUGHT of.

Talk to the dork's supervisor and make sure that they realize that he's messed it up - and charge them for fixing it. -= Beer is food! Is it suppertime? =-

Thank you all for great answers.

I was unable to access the "add/remove programs" so I tried repairing windows from boot disks, recovery disk and off course the CD-ROM. Installation works fine but I'm ending up with a blue screen error (BOD) every time I'm booting the computer.

*** STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0x80737969, 0x00000001, 0x00E6FDED)

According to what I've read STOP 0x0000001E May Occur in Win32k.sys Under Stress (Q196330). If this is the reason upgrading to the latest SP would probably help. But without being able to start Windows NT even in VGA mode it is hard to install a new service pack.

If I can't install a new service pack I have to reinstall NT or 2000 Pro on the computer and do a complete reinstallation of every program. I'm not sure if I'll let the same service technician touch the computers again though.

Is there Data on this machine u need to get off?

If so, can you slave it to another machine and retrieve the data?

If thats not an issue, just reformat and reinstall. Something tells me that even if u get it up and running, you are going to having soooo many problems with it in the future.

Write a letter to the numbskulls boss and carbon copy him and your boss. THEY should "DO" something for you for this screw up.

Just installed Windows 2000 on the computer and it's running great.

Most programs and all data is located on the Win 2K server so there was no data to retrieve.

I'm going to talk to this so called "senior consultant" soon and see what sort of arrangement we can work out.

you may be able to do a parallel install of NT on the PC and then copy over the files that are causing the problems.

I think doing a complete reinstall is the only way to be safe tho unless you want strange things happening in the future.

Also once the engineer is shot, staple a SP6a CD to his head so he remembers what service pack goes with what!!!
