I would like to know if a copy of Outlook 2007 is included with each CAL?

If I have to buy a full copy of Office 2007 in addition to the ES2k7 and CALs my company will be broke.

Is there such a thing as Outlook Express 2007 or will Outlook Express 2003 work just fine for the average worker?

Regrettably it appears that an Outlook CAL is no longer included:

Q: Will the Outlook Standard license still be included in the Exchange Standard CAL or Exchange Enterprise CAL?
A: In an effort to simplify licensing for customers, Microsoft is aligning products in a way that maps to the most common customers purchase process. By separating client and server purchases we are helping to streamline the purchasing process for our customers. As a result Outlook, which is a client product, will not be included as part of Exchange Server 2007. An exception will be made for active SA customers.[/i[

Outlook Express (now known as 'Windows Mail' in Vista) is not a great option for connecting users to Exchange- While theoretically it will work fine by using IMAP or POP3 to connect you'll be missing 99% of the client functionality by not using a client that was designed to be used with Exchange- In fact I'd say you'd be better of using the new Exchange 2007 OWA interface as opposed to using POP/IMAP with Outlook Express.

Does this mean that anyone who wants to use Outlook 2007 needs to buy a full copy of Office 2007 or is there a stand-alone Outlook 2007 client that can be purchased?

Check out:

Looks like the list price for standalone Outlook 2007 is $109.95, compared to the list price of Office 2007 Standard suite of $399.

It's a shame an Outlook 2007 license is not included with Exchange 2007 CALs; Outlook 2007 has some great improvements in conjunction with Ex2k7 but I think this will cause many people to stick with Outlook 2003...

Outlook 2007 is NOT included in the standard or enterprise CAL for Exchange 2007 which is a departure from the previously used CALs of Exchange 2003 and earlier.

Outlook 2007 is 110 as detailed above (i.e. $110 in the US and £110 in the UK which is about double the price).

Windows Mail is a possibility but you still need a CAL. OWA is a possibility BUT YOU STILL NEED A CAL.

Cool huh?
