Does installing NT Server or IIS install an SMTP or POP3 server? I want to set up a lab at home to setup an email server.. and some email clients ... including Outlook Express, say, to connect to the email server, for studying.

Do I have to install Exchange Server... and configure it as a POP3 and SMTP server... or is that an overkill?

I believe there are freeware email servers on the web to use as a email server.... please help....

What do I need to do or start?

If you install IIS you get an SMTP gateway

what does that mean exactly as an SMTP gateway? What about POP3? Can I store email on the server?
