Does Exchange 2003 SP1 apply to SBS 2003 with exchange? Is there another SP just for SBS with exchange?

Unless Microsoft changed their service pack policy (which is entirely possible) all service packs are SBS aware and can be applied to the SBS product.

I just intalled this Service Pack on SBS 2003 and it worked fine! It even fixed a problem I was having with OWA where "Loading..." would not disapear from where the messages should be listed.

thanks

After installing E2K3 SP1 to SBS server, more and more partners are reporting that store.exe is consuming more memory than before. This also occurs or normal Exchange 2K3 servers, the only difference is that SBS has the monitoring component which will send out email notification once the threshold is reached.

This issue occurs if the amount of the memory is below or above 1 GB.

Many partners have found that implementing the suggestions in the following KB, it makes things better but the store memory usage is still higher once SP1 was applied: ‘815372 How to Optimize Memory Usage in Exchange Server 2003 -
It is normal that Exchange grabs any available RAM to cache messages for faster response, and gives it up as needed by other applications and this usually works flawlessly.

You may find that you will need to increase the reporting threshold so you don't get notified of a problem that does not really exist.

To view the store.exe private bytes values, do this:

On your SBS2K server, go to Start -> All Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Performance. Select System Monitor in the left side window, then right click in the background of the chart window on the right, select Add Counters. Under Performance Object, select Process (not Processor). In the Select counter from list, select Private Bytes. In the Select instances from list, select Store. Then click Add. In the lower right window, select the Private Bytest counter, and above this list but below the chart you will
see the Last, Average, Min, Max, and Duration values for store.exe private bytes.

Add about 10MB to the max value to keep from getting notified.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Regards,

Mark

I dont think there is necessarily an issue with Exchange SP1 using more memory, but rather that it reports memory usage differently.

Prior to SP1, the database cached bytes were counted as mapped bytes. Now with SP1, they are counted under private bytes. So the private bytes count will be significantly higher, while mapped bytes will be much lower.

So yes, increasing the message threshold is the way to go.
