does CR (or it's associated files) conflict with itself?

Hi

We have developed some software with Visual C++, on Windows 2000 platform which has a lot of reports. However, we have discovered that if Crystal Reports software is installed on a Windows 1998 or NT machine it causes certain reports with sub reports not to run. When the CR program is removed the reports work fine. Is there a .dll or some other file that is installed when Crystal is installed that is causing this conflict? As we have a case where the user has Windows 1998 and was running CR. However, in this case the reports still do not work even after uninstalling CR. Maybe other programs install this rogue file too....

Thanks for your help.

Do you get an error when the reports fail?
When you don't have CR, are you running the reports from an application?

Some application interfaces are not compatible with an upgrade or downgrade of the CR dlls. Ken Hamady, On-site Custom Crystal Reports Training & Consulting

Hi Ken

Thank you for your reply.

Error message was "Print Job 0" - were the error code is 0
and "print job" was hard coded. As you can see, the error code does not really shed any light.

When the reports are run, it is always done through the application as parameters are required to generate the report.

Is this a custom app or a commercial app?
What version of CR does the App use?
What version of CR are you installing? Ken Hamady, On-site Custom Crystal Reports Training & Consulting

Hi Ken

It is a commercial app and both the user and our company use version 8. And we used version 8 to test the CR.
There is no conflict with Windows 2000, only Windows 98 and NT as far as we are aware.

You might need to use the active dll comparison tool to see if the program is using different dlls after CR is installed. I recently wrote an article about checking the active dlls in my newsletter:

Thanks Ken - I never knew that this handy utilty exists!

Hi Ken

My colleague used the module to check which active .dll's
were used before installation, after installation and after removal. However, these tests proved inconclusive.
The dlls that were updated during installation remained after installation but the reports worked (after uninstallling CR). So, perhaps it is not a problem with dlls afer all? Do you think there could be a reason why the reports aren't showing?

thanks,

Shirley

The reports worked after the uninstall even though the dll files were still on the PC. I guess the real question is were they still USED after the uninstall.

If you discover that, after the uninstall, the list of active dll's is identical, but now the reports run again, then it isn't the dlls themselves.

The following KB article might help:

Hi Ken

Assuming the module program is correct, there was no change in the list active dll's before and also after installing and unistalling CR. So, it is not the dll's after all!

Thank you for the article. I will need to go through the
list to see what the software conflict may be!

Thanks again for all your help.

You did check the version of the dll's and not just the names, I assume? Ken Hamady, On-site Custom Crystal Reports Training & Consulting

Hi Ken

Yes, we checked the version of the dll's as well. 3 of the dll's were updated and they remained after the uninstall and generated the report with no problems.

And the only problem is the subreports? I am stumped. Ken Hamady, On-site Custom Crystal Reports Training & Consulting

Hi Ken

Yes, it seems to affect the reports that has subreports. The other reports that do not have subreports are running OK.
