If in your travels you have found an exceptional freeware tool to handle nagging or other problems, please post here.

My XMAS presents to All:

. An excellent Print Screen Key replacement:

. Lifesavers (Get and burn both):
Knoppix: Ultimate Boot CD:
. Registry Backup and Restore:
ERUNT:
. My vote for utility of the year (UOY):

It does ask you to register, but you can safely ignore that. (Hey, send her $5 US).

Treesize from Jam Software ( I have used it for years.
You may find it worth buying the pro version if you use a lot.

AVG Free Edition antivirus from No support, but anybody with a reasonable amount of expertise shouldn't have any problems.

Kerio Personal Firewall from My comments for AVG apply here as well.

I should add

ZipCentral ( a great free zip/unzip program for those who aren't running XP or forked out for a Winzip license.

IrfanView ( free for personal use only - a multimedia player/graphics viewer. Redundant on XP because of the in built media player and Picture/Fax viewer but very useful for everyone else. Remember to get the full plugins pack though for maximum flexibility...

CSE HTML Validator Lite 3.5 ( useful for webmasters to check their code out. Not really applicable to WinXP but useful nonetheless.

If your into freeware this lead via the Langalist will fill your Christmas Stocking.

"Fred: Like everyone else, I've probably got more links to
download sites bookmarked than I have time to search them for new software. However, I just happened to stumble onto a pretty decent U.K. site ( ) that seems to have possibly one of the best freeware buffets
around. Thought I would pass this along. ---Jim

Thanks, Jim. That site is part of the confederation of sites involved in the "Freeware Revolution" that we talked about last September ( ). Nice"

"Tuneup utilities" there is a trial version..and until using this did not believe that a dial-up connection could be speed-ed up....many other tools to use just brilliant...worth a look just for trial version....I ended up buying it.

Happy Holidays all.

Heres in my humble opinion the BEST (did I mention free) compression program on the market.

I took a 2gig file to 986mb with this.

Enjoy.

Non-free but incredebly cheap utils of the year have to go to dameware anyone who has used it you KNOW IT!!

and VisualAuditPro full network audit of over 150 PC in under 2 hours from server intall to full report.

Hey talking of freeware anyone remember the christmas dwarf throwing game set on a boat that was actually a Trojan virus? Yeah I know it was a trojan but I am still temptes to play it again just to see the sharks eat the dwarves LOL!

Festive greeting to you all,

Iain

Two nice little applets I've installed in my SysTray are NetMeter (at and SysInfo MyWork (at The first is a little speedometer for broadband users and the second a memory and CPU use meter. Very handy to ensure spyware isn't calling out and no one's using my cpu cycles 'cept me.

Mental note to self: send Irfan Skiljan a contribution for the hours of use and enjoyment his IrfanView has given me.

Sloth is the mother of invention. Necessity is just a mother...
