I was about to install VS.NET on a WINXP machine when the
Web Projects Requiregents appeared as follows.

If you want to create Web projects on this machine, you must first install additional components. To create Web projects, both Internet Information Services (IIS) and FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) must be installed and configured. You can, however, create Web projects on remote machines that have these components installed and configured.

There seems to be a contradiction here. Our production server where we publish the web site has IIS 5 on. To develop web apps with asp.net do I need to install IIS 5 on my WINXP prof machine?

You only need IIS and FPSE installed if you are developing web components locally on the machine, otherwise if you are connected to a remote computer that already has these components installed you do not need to install them.
But this is assuming you are connecting to the remote machine doing development and not actually developing the product on your local machine.

Does confuse you any more?

I am actually doing development on my machine (local copy).
I connect to the server (currently with Visual Interdev) where the master copy is.

I then upload (copy) to the web application to the production server.

So I DO need IIS on my machine.

Thanks

since you are developing on your box and then uploading it once it is working then yes you will need IIS on your machine.
