here is the output from an nslookup command, this has been like this since I started here and it is purely as a matter of interest that I ask...web access etc is totally unaffected:

Z:\>nslookup DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Can't find server name for address <DNS Server IP>: Timed out
*** Default servers are not available
Server: UnKnown
Address: <DNS Server IP>

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: tek-tips.com
Address: 216.45.19.33
Aliases:
An explaination of this output would be most appreciated.

Thanks

It's just because the DNS server that you are querying doesn't have a PTR record. It has an IP addresss but no name associated with that address.

I see, how can I amend that?

By adding a PTR record in the reverse zone.

Are you using a local DNS server or an internet/ISP DNS server?

Chris.

Cyberspace, Just to be on the safe side run DcDiag.exe and NetDiag.exe with the /v switch, to see if you have any other issues. Better to take care of any issues now, not latter.Located in support\tools directory of the Windows CD, also depending on your Ms patch level, you may needed to download newer versions.
