I recently setup a new win2k server to replace an outdated NT 4.0 PDC. After doing this I relized that my win2kpro clients could not contact it unless I changed the DNS address on the local machines to the server address. When I set it up I just used the loop back address that is default in win2k server for DNS. The problem is that I have an outside ISP and I use there DNS for external resolution. If I put the local address as the primary and the ISP DNS as the secondary I can't reach either and vise versa. If anybody has any suggestions I would appriciate it.

If you look back in the threads, I just went through the same thing. Look for DNS Question posted by mattwray. You need 2 NICS, One on the ISP side and 1 on the LAN side and use RRAS.

HI.

No, you don't need a second NIC nor RRAS.

All servers and workstations should use the internal W2K server as DNS server.
In the DNS management console of the server, you should delete the root zone (displayed as a dot ".&quot - this tells the DNS server that it is not the root of the DNS name space.
Then refresh or restart DNS, and go to the DNS server properties. In the "Forwarders" tab add your ISP DNS servers.

You only need the 2 NIC if you want your clients to access the internet through this server.

I haven't ever heard of deleting the root from the DNS server. I certainly haven't done that and mine works fine with the forwarders.

I wouldn't delete the root without confirmation from Microsoft.

Lol.
Deleting the root zone is a common practise and is required for a lot of DNS setup. You need to know how to do it for your Win2k Network Infratstructre exam.
Anyway you can always the root zone again afterwards.
