If I type in a brwoser \\machine1 I get an error spit back. However if I use RealVNC and type that machine in, and sign in, it points me to a different machine. I cleared the DNs cache on the server, any ideas why this would be happening? I can access the machines shares fine using the IP.

Look for an inproper A record and change it to point to the correct server\IP mapping

Fixed it that way, thanks!!! How does that happen though?

DNS had not scavenged the old record yet so it just sits there and causes headaches. Check your Scavenging old records setting. You may need to adjust these if you changed your DHCP for a quick turn around like 8-24 hours or so.

Hey good deal, would it be best to just do it manually every so often (50 employee business) instead of have it taking palce every 7 days. Read some warning about it, etc...want to make sure I understand it all before I make any changes. We have remote users, etc...as well.

Thanks Again...

One more bump...to assure myself this can be done in a live environemnt and manually every so often without any negative impact?

If you set it to do it automatically, there really is no need to manually do it unless you determine there is a problem.

MS made it sound as though if you are not sure of the consequences to not attempt it. As thoguh things would come crashing down...

Sorry been out of town. I recomment the Automatic also. No need for more administrative tasks. Just make sure the Scavenging is a few days longer than your DHCP settings.

Lease is set to 8 days on DHCP, so run the Scavenging at say 12?

I would recommend DHCP at 3 and scavenge at 7, but all environments are different. i currently use 1 DHCP and 7 scavenge
