Please Help!!

I am running one DNS server on an NT 4.0 SP6a machine that is a member server of an NT4 domain. I have defined the forward-lookup zones and backward-lookup zones. I have a class-c subnet of 10.1.1.0 where my first device on my subnet is 10.1.1.1. The DNS is setup to be a fowarder to my ISP dns as well as a cache and is my primary DNS server.

In the forward-lookup zones I have added host records for each server host.

In the reverse lookup zone I have named it 1.1.10.in-addr.arpa and when I try to add records PTR is not a choice. The list of available choices that appear are the same as the foward lookup zone choices for adding records to the zone.

when I run an nslookup from the dns host machine for a machine name "Cement" the results are below:
Server: UnKnown
Address: 10.1.1.4

Name: cement.ychnet.com
Address: 10.1.1.2

when I run the same nslookup from an XP Pro workstation I receive the follwing results:

*** Can't find server name for address 10.1.1.4: non existant domain

and the same error is produced when you run nslookup with no parameters at the XP workstation.
*** Can't find server name for address 10.1.1.4: non existant domain
Default Server: h-64-105-172-26.SNVACAID.covad.net
Address: 64.105.172.26

when I run a reverse lookup query using nslookup for IP 10.1.1.4 I receive the following results on any workstation on my lan:

*** Can't find server name for address 10.1.1.4: non existant domain
Default Server: h-64-105-172-26.SNVACAID.covad.net: Non-existant domain
Address: 64.105.172.26

My secondary DNS server is working fine from the ISP, but I'm not sure that my internal DNS is working properly or maybe nslookup does not work on NT4 properly?

Any Ideas??

Have you setup a DNS entry and its PTR entry for 10.1.1.4? [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K

yes...

In my forward zone, I have an A record and associated PTR record for the server name pointing to 10.1.1.4.

In the reverse lookup zone I do not have any ptr records because it is not an available option when I choose New Record on the reverse zone.

Any Ideas?

Err, just checking, but you should have two zones. The first zone being

companyDNSname.com

Which is your forward lookup zone. In there should be the following

Name - Record Type - Value/Data
--------------------------------
companyDNSname.com - NS - DNSserverName.companyDNSname.com
companyDNSname.com - SOA - DNSserverName.companyDNSname.com
DNSserverName - A - 10.1.1.4

Then your second zone would end up being

1.1.10.in-addr.arpa

Which is your reverse lookup zone. In there should be the following

Name - Record Type - Value/Data
--------------------------------
1.1.10.in-addr.arpa - NS - DNSserverName.companyDNSname.com
1.1.10.in-addr.arpa - SOA - DNSserverName.companyDNSname.com
10.1.1.4 - PTR - DNSserverName.companyDNSname.com

If you don't have that setup, then something is wrong...

When you add a new A record to the forward lookup zone (companyDNSname.com), and tick the "Create associated PTR record", it should automatically create the record in your reverse lookup zone as well (1.1.10.in-addr.arpa).

Also, all your clients, and your server, should be configured with the DNS suffix companyDNSname.com, so that when they do a DNS lookup without any suffix, it will automatically append its default suffix to the end.

Ala, if you went to a client and did

nslookup DNSserverName

the client would append '.companyDNSname.com' to the end of it (and thus would end up being the same as:)

nslookup DNSserverName.companyDNSname.com

Which your DNS server is authorative for. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K
