Trying to remedy a situation with a home PC - looking for any ideas or suggestions. Home PC with Windows ME and AOL dial-up. You can sign on to AOL fine - can access e-mail thru AOL interface and a few other AOL features that are non-http. However, no http browsing capability, nor ftp - either thru IE or AOL browser. Funny thing is that DNS resolution is affected as well - can ping by IP address but not by host name. It is correctly obtaining an AOL IP. All network and dial-up adapters are installed correctly and TCP/IP protocol looks fine. Have tried removing all adapters and re-installing but no success. Several complete virus scans have produced no results (Norton, McAfee Stinger, etc) All adware has been removed as well.

After an unsuccessful attempt on Monday night, we will be back in front of this PC tonight and are looking for any other suggestions. We plan to run a utility to repair Winsock as we think it could be a virus that has damaged Winsock. Any other random thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreicated. Thanks in advance.

You have two strikes against you, ME is one of the worst thing MS ever came up with, and I personally am not crazy about AOL. (Just my 2 cent's worth, not a slam.) Has the machine ever worked, if it has, what changed?

Well, turned out to be some partially uninstalled adware that was causing the problem. Ran a complete AdAware scan and removed everything and browsing capability was restored. Thanks anyway.
